Our Imbed

     One of the units in our battalion has an imbedded photojournalist by the name of Ken James.  Ken is a stand up guy who's photographic skills have captured both the triumphs and tribulations of our mission.  Ken sent me a few of his pictures and I've included them in a photo gallery (cropped and low resolution - he does make his living selling his photographs).  Even at a low resolution they are stunning.

Reading the Mercury When you are behind the FOBs high walls you aren’t really safe, at least in the traditional sense. Any attempt to convince yourself that is a tranquil oasis is quickly expelled by infrequent arrival of the long, low wail of rockets and mortars. But in comparison to patrols our little home is as secure fortress in a sea of uncertainty. In fact troops usually spend more time debating the temperature then they do worrying about indirect fire. One of the ongoing debates at the TOC is how to measure how molten the daytime temperature gets. Some people swear by the thermometer in front of the TOC, an old fashioned plastic thermometer that absorbs the full light of the sun. Others prefer the small thermometer bolted to the back wall of the TOC, a plastic device that rests in a shaded alcove. If you consulted the former then today's temperature was 116 degrees. If you conferred with the latter you would loudly pronounce that it was only 111 degrees. I've never been a big number guy - I am happy just saying the day was miserably hot. Dusty Days, Dusty Nights Last night a hard and brittle wind swept through our FOB. The dusty tempest was like a corked wine, rather then refresh the stifling air it just heaped more bitterness into the atmosphere. By late evening the air was a palpable presence, gusting sand pulsing as if it was being forced along by some furious, shuddering heart. As the sandstorm congealed even the dim light of the stars winked out, leaving us in a deep and unforgiving darkness. But as the visibility dropped the air came alive with sound. The sound of a sandstorm is played by an orchestra of tin, wood, and concrete, each contributing a cacophony of shrieks and groans. By time I woke up in the morning the worst of the storm had passed but the blizzard of dust still lay heavy in the air. Every exposed surface was coated in a dust that was as fine as talcum powder and as deep as a early Spring frost. In the the dusty half light it almost appeared to be snow.
